Discover Istanbul Province by Province: Beykoz

Beykoz Istanbul
Along the Bosphorus coastal road on the Anatolian side, there lies a beautiful province with a natural and historical allure. Neighboring the Üsküdar province it is the gate towards the Black Sea, with many green hills, streams, rivers and authentic historical buildings. It was home to many ancient civilizations and wars due to its strategic location until it fell into the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

The amazing coastal road of Beykoz starts from Anadoluhisarı, one of the prettiest villages of Istanbul with great historical importance. It takes its name from the castle, which was built in an area of 7000 m2 by the Ottoman Sultan Beyazıd I, for the preparations of the Istanbul siege. The famous Küçüksu Palace, the summerhouse of the Ottoman Sultans, is a just a couple of minutes walk from the castle. After the construction of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, this zone became popular for new residential areas, together with Kavacık, which is located at on the Asian side of the bridge. Kavacık, being one of the closest districts to the European side, is a financial center surrounded with modern building complexes and high-end Istanbul properties for sale.

Kanlıca is a cute district famous for its powdered yogurt, pretty streets, busy fishermen and opulent buildings. There are several luxury houses and mansions lying along the seashore, many of which have become the center of attraction for upper class residents as well as international clients who invest in Istanbul.  The oldest mansion in the area is Amcazade Köprülü Hüseyin Pasha Mansion, which was built for the Grand Vizier Köprülü Hüseyin Pasha in the 19th century. There is a lot to see in this zone, as the area is also one of the most preferred districts to visit during daily Bosphorus tours.

The beautiful Khedive Palace (Hidiv Kasrı), located on the hills of Beykoz, is an example of the neo-classical Ottoman architecture inspired by Art Nouveau and the Italian Renaissance. It was built by an Italian architecture for the last viceroy (Hidiv) of Egypt, Abbas Hilmi in 1907. When you visit there, you can enjoy your lunch in front of the gorgeous view of the Bosphorus Strait and take a walk in one of the biggest rose gardens in Istanbul. The second important palace is Mecidiye Palace (Mecidiye Kasrı), which was commissioned by another viceroy of Egypt, Mehmed Ali Pasha and later, by his son and gifted to Sultan Abdulmecid. The renovation of the palace was completed in 2011 and it is open to all visitors for a low entrance fee. As those hills get their share of the Black Sea winds, it is better to bring some extra clothes.

This area is mostly preferred by upper-middle class families as there are many luxury investment projects on the way towards the hills of Beykoz. The construction of the third bridge keeps those areas busier and they are already being filled with many luxury flats and Istanbul homes for sale. The coastal district of Riva, which is 16 km away from Beykoz, also gets its share of property investment in Istanbul. Riva is very popular for a weekend escape to enjoy the coast, while watching the Riva Stream flowing towards the Black Sea in front of the Riva Castle, which is settled on the hill.

Anadolu Kavağı is a small fishing village at the intersection of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. It is reachable either by daily Bosphorus tours or by bus. There are many fish restaurants close to the port and a castle, where you may enjoy the fascinating view.

Polonezköy is the hidden gem of Istanbul with miles of green forests, gorgeous wooden houses, boutique hotels and restaurants. This area is very popular among the locals and it is one of the best choices for wedding organizations and celebrations. The green trails make it a perfect place to escape to nature.
